Why Engineering careers are built, not found: The path to long-term success

A few years ago, I met an Engineer named Mikko. He was smart, qualified, and like many others sending out many applications with no response. As you can understand, his frustration was growing and he was asking for my advice what to do.

Instead of pushing him to “apply harder,” I suggested something different: to build momentum as I see the situation from the “other seat” as a hiring recruiter I was able to oversee the whole situation and advised him accordingly.

I suggested him to update his LinkedIn profile which was missing some important and beneficial information for his job seeking. Encouraged him to identify key industry connections and to attend a local networking events. Within three weeks, Mikko was interviewing for a role that wasn’t even publicly advertised. Today, he is leading projects he once thought were out of reach.

This is the reality I have seen in my 8+ years at Enersense International Oyj, Expert Services Team: careers are not found they are built, one decision at a time.

Small, strategic moves create big shifts

Studies show that nearly 70% of job opportunities come from networking or referrals, not from job boards. For Mikko, it was one introduction that changed everything.

When you focus on momentum over perfection, whether it is refreshing your CV, reaching out to a single contact or joining one professional event, you set off a chain reaction that can transform your career.

Skills are currency, adaptability is wealth

In the engineering and technical industries, technology changes fast. Today’s competitive skill can be tomorrow’s baseline. That is why adaptability is the ultimate advantage.

Professionals who invest in even one new certification or tool often unlock unexpected opportunities. According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Report, adding just one in-demand skill can boost your hiring chances by up to 50%. That is how professionals turn “good candidates” into “must-hires.”

Culture fit outweighs checklists

Mikko didn’t get hired because he ticked every single box. He got hired because his values and working style fit the company’s mission and culture. Skills can be trained alignment cannot.

At Enersense Expert Services Team, this is why we go beyond CVs. We match talent with environments where they can thrive, not just survive. Because when there is a fit, careers don’t just move forward they accelerate.

The Momentum Principle: one step changes everything

A career is built on small, powerful moments: The day you connect with a mentor, the first time you share your expertise publicly, the project you almost said “no” to but didn’t. These choices create motion. Once momentum starts, opportunities follow.

Here is my advice to every job seeker: Stop waiting for the perfect timing or perfect job ad. Start moving because movement creates clarity, confidence and results.

At Enersense Expert Services, I have seen how one conversation can change a career. Maybe yours is next.

If you are ready to take that step, whether you are in engineering, technical fields, or just searching for direction, let’s connect.

Momentum starts now and it starts with you.
